What does SkinPen treat?
SkinPen microneedling is suitable for all skin types and treats many skin care concerns, including:
- Improving skin tone and texture
- Minimising the look of lines and wrinkles
- Reducing the appearance of acne scars
- Tightening loose or sagging skin
- Reducing the look of pigmentation, sun damage, age and liver spots.
- Minimising the look of stretch marks
How does microneedling work?
Microneedling is a minimally invasive treatment which works by using small micro needles to create microscopic punctures in the skin. When the skin has been agitated in this way it starts off the body’s natural healing mechanisms. The healing process stimulates collagen and elastin production, and it is these two proteins that are responsible for improving skin tone and texture, tightening, firming and giving skin a youthful glow.
Microneedling collagen production
Collagen is found naturally in the body, but unfortunately, as we age, collagen production declines. Less collagen in the skin equates to more lines and wrinkles, sagging and crepey looking skin.
For patients who are suffering with acne scars, increased collagen production repairs the damaged skin that may look pitted, as the new collagen fills in the indented areas, making acne scars a lot less noticeable.
It takes between four and six weeks for collagen and elastin to fully develop after your first microneedling treatment. With a course of treatment you can expect to see visibly noticeable results in skin texture and quality.
Microneedling downtime
Microneedling is minimally invasive and as a result it doesn’t require a lot of downtime after a treatment. Most patients will be able to carry on with their normal routines straight after a microneedling session. The skin can feel a bit red or sore after treatment and some patients like to wait for a reduction in redness before continuing with their daily activities, but this will be down to individual and personal preferences. The redness will normally fade after 48 hours, and it is best not to wear makeup while the treated area is healing as this can cause irritation, inflammation and breakouts.
